On Friday Night, Watkins Glen International hosted the Jumpboost Racing League. In a smaller field than normal (due to suspension protocol) the racers took to the track in a race that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Stage one showed lots of fast driving with drivers pushing their limits to see who could pass where and what braking points could be waited out to maximize speed exiting turns 1 and the bus stop. This stage set the tone for the rest of the race. Our first caution (lap 2 of 9) was brought out when the #11 of Derek Reddick-Baker got loose coming out of the bus-stop into turn 5 and collected the #51 of Eric Wolfe leaving the #8 of Robert Lopez no where to go but in between the two sending Eric into the wall. The drivers got out of the caution with minimal damage and were back to racing on lap 5. The stage finished without incident and Eric Wolfe was your stage winner.
Stage two started off much like Stage one. A caution after the bus stop. The #8 of Robert Lopez got into the back of the #11 of Derek Reddick-Baker sending Lopez into the wall and thus starting our second caution of the night. The drivers resumed racing on lap 4 of 9 in stage two. The #45 car driven by Greg Alan took a huge lead in the second stage at one point, holding over a seven second lead over second place. Alan and the #45 car would go on to win stage two by a 5.4 second lead.
Things happen in threes. We started off stage three with another caution in the bus stop when the #8 of Robert Lopez had slight brake fade which lead him to rear end the leader in the #51 Toyota driven by Eric Wolfe. This sent Wolfe into a full on spin through the bus stop and sent him to the back of the field. With 19 to go in the race, Eric Wolfe got loose coming out of turn 8 sending him spinning into the #8 of Robert Lopez and nearly he nearly collected the #11 of Derek Reddick-Baker in the process. Racing continued and the field spread out quite a distance. Lap 39, the #46 driven by Patrick Ganczewski and the #99 of Orry Perce got into it going into the bus stop and a caution was thrown. At this point, our leader had over a 40 second lead on second place due to green flag pit stops. Our next caution came on lap 42 of the race that started entering the bus stop and then exiting the bus stop when the leaders got together sending #51 of Eric Wolfe spinning into the wall just on the exit of the bus stop. Hot off the restart from that caution the #45 of Greg Alan got into the grass of turn 1 which slowed the #51 of Eric Wolfe causing the #8 of Robert Lopez to push Wolfe up into the #99 of Orry Perce. Alan and Lopez would spin and hit the wall just after pit road to cause our last caution of the race. This led up to the final two lap sprint of the race in NASCAR: Overtime.
The green/white/checkered started with Wolfe getting a quick jump on Alan and Reddick-Baker into turn one. The bus stop claimed its last victim of the night with Orry Perce getting hit by the #46 and then pushed off the track. When talking with Perce after the race about the incident he said, “I went on to the brakes to drive through the bus stop section and had the #46 drive almost straight through the rear of my car causing my car to unsettle and go into a wicked spin to the wall. Looking back on it I was upset when it happened for sure. To go from mid pack to the back on the last couple laps was awful”
Orry still seems focused though, he later said, “I’m not going to let what happened go to my head and get all upset about it. Going to keep pushing forward in the season and going for that rookie of the year/playoff spot.”
The final lap proved to be an exciting one as Greg Alan attempted to brake late into the bus stop in a last ditch effort to get ahead of the leader but the speed he carried in was just too much and Eric Wolfe was able to make a pass exiting the bus stop and with that he was able to grab a slight lead over the #45 car and the victory.
